Managed Backup
A failed disk, a ransomware attack or a simple mistake is enough to wipe out years of accounting records, quotes and client files. Most New Caledonian businesses do have a backup. Many find out on the day of the incident that it had stopped working months earlier.
Solution IT sets up and monitors your data backup from Nouméa, across New Caledonia.
Managed backup, not just software#
Installing a backup tool takes an hour. Making sure it still runs two years later, that alerts get handled and that restores actually work when needed is a service. That is the difference between a backup and a managed backup.
We take care of:
- Daily monitoring of backup jobs, with alerting on failure
- Failure handling: we act on errors before you notice them
- Restore testing, because an untested backup is only a hypothesis
- Incident support: we run the recovery with you
- Capacity tracking and retention tuning as your data grows
Ransomware protection through immutability#
Modern ransomware goes after your backups first. If it encrypts both the server and the backup NAS sitting next to it, you have no fallback left — and that is the most common scenario.
We offer immutable backups as an option: for the defined retention period, stored data cannot be modified or deleted, even with compromised administrative credentials. Combined with an off-site copy, this leaves you a clean restore point whatever happens on your local network.
This is the practical application of the 3-2-1-1-0 rule, covered in our article on backup and data integrity.
What we back up#
- Servers, Windows and Linux, physical or virtualised
- Virtual machines on Hyper-V and VMware
- Workstations, including remote workers
- NAS devices and file shares
- Microsoft 365: Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams — Microsoft does not back up your data for you
Backups run daily and automatically by default. Frequency and retention are set with you, based on how critical each data set really is: a line-of-business database and an archive share do not call for the same treatment.
Where your data lives#
Your backups are hosted on our infrastructure in New Caledonia or with a cloud provider located in the European Union, depending on the option set in your contract. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
No transfer to a third country takes place without your prior written consent. That commitment is written into our terms and conditions and the attached data processing agreement — it is a contractual clause, not a marketing claim.
Your data stays yours#
When a contract ends, for any reason, you get your data back: export in an open standard format within fifteen business days on request, then a thirty-day reversibility period before deletion from our infrastructure. Switching providers should never mean abandoning your history.
Why the New Caledonian context matters#
Power cuts, cyclone season, lead times on replacement hardware, constrained bandwidth to mainland France: a restore here does not play out the way it does in Paris. A server that dies in January is not replaced in forty-eight hours.
That is exactly why a New Caledonian backup strategy must combine a local copy, for fast everyday restores, and an off-site copy, for the major incident: fire, water damage, theft or cyberattack. And why your contact needs to be reachable in your own time zone on the day it matters.
Let’s talk about your data#
We start with an assessment: what is backed up today, what is not, and what you would actually lose in a disaster. You walk away with a clear picture, whether or not you hand us the next step.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between managed backup and backup software?
Backup software copies your data, and you are the one who checks that it worked. Managed backup includes daily job monitoring, failure handling, restore testing and hands-on support the day you actually need your data back. Most data losses happen with a backup in place that nobody was watching.
Does a backup really protect against ransomware?
Only if the ransomware cannot reach it. Current attacks target network-reachable backups first, especially NAS devices and permanently connected external drives. We offer immutability as an option: for the chosen retention period, backed-up files cannot be altered or deleted, even with your own administrative credentials.
Isn't Microsoft 365 already backed up by Microsoft?
No. Microsoft guarantees service availability, not recovery of your content. Deletions, a message removed by a user or a compromised account remain your responsibility, and recycle bins have limited retention. An external backup of your Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams data is still required.
Where is the backed-up data stored?
On our local infrastructure in New Caledonia, or with a cloud provider located in the European Union, depending on the option set in your contract. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. No data leaves that perimeter without your prior written consent.
How long does a restore take?
File and mailbox restores are started as soon as you ask, during business hours. Time to service depends on the volume involved, your internet bandwidth and the type of restore: a few files come back in minutes, a full server takes longer. We establish that estimate with you before go-live, not during the incident.
What happens to my data if I end the contract?
You get it back. On request, we export the service data in an open standard format within fifteen business days, followed by a thirty-day reversibility period before deletion from our infrastructure. Your backups are never used as commercial leverage.
